Bio-based products are made wholly or partially from renewable biological compounds. Compared to petroleum-based plastics, these bio-based products require less enegry and water for manufactering and generate less waste. In addition to using more energy, water, and producing more waste, petroleum-based plastics emit large amounts of carbon waste as well. Due to the growing world population and the limitations in natural resources, Bio-based products are recognized as a promising alternative to conventional plastic with regards to finite fossil supplies and climate change.
Bio-based products are growing rapidly because of the clear advantages they have. Their carbon footprint can be much lower than oil-based equivalents. They also provide excellent biodegradability, helping the world deal with the increasing problems of litter, particularly in the rivers and seas. It is not easy to come up with traditional plastic substitutes that are cheap, lightweight, durable, and environmentally benign. However, progress is possible. Moving to a bio based production system is a sensible approach for achieving economic and environmental sustainability.
